MISSION

“Let Hani‘o Thrive” Ho‘ola Hani‘o  is a grass-roots organization dedicated to reviving the fishery of Hani‘o , the traditional fishing grounds instituted outside Kalaeloa by the ancestral fisherman Ku’ula and his son ‘Ai’ai, and to mālama all the cultural knowledge, traditions, and practices associated with the Hāniʻo/Waimānalo region.  Although Hani‘o has been neglected through the years, we recall the ‘olelo no’eau, “He po’i na kai uli, kai ko’o,‘a‘ohe hina ke ko‘a”, which translates as “Though the sea be deep and rough, the coral rock remains standing.”  Besides “coral”, ko’a also means “fishing grounds” as well as “a fishing shrine constructed to make fish multiply.”  Therefore, this ‘olelo no’eau also conveys that our fishing grounds and our fishing shrine have withstood the test of time.

VISION

The kaona behind this proverb praises those who remain steadfast in the face of difficult times.  Like this proverb proclaims, Ho‘ola Hani‘o affirms our steadfastness despite the negative changes to our land and sea.  We rally to restore our coastal waters which connect with the life giving waters from our summits, and from our heavens beyond.  As we allow Hani‘o fishery to thrive once again, so too will Hani‘o fishery help our communities to thrive as well.
